Wireless / 4G Capable – What does this mean?
Devices with the 4G Capable icon have been tested by Active Online to be suitable for a wireless or cable free installation. These devices are suitable to be connected to the mobile network to provide a cable free solution for an intercom or CCTV system. Note that devices labelled 4G Capable will also work over 5G or the internet in general. Essentially these devices can work for your project where there is no suitable cable infrastructure or costs of a cabled solution are prohibitive.
What does this mean?
Some homes or buildings do not have an easy cabled solution due to the cost of installing or replacing cable. Cabling, when labor costs are included, is a significant cost of some access control and surveillance systems. These identified products will provide a solution via the internet where cabling is too expensive.
What makes a product suitable for 4G Capable or wireless cable free connection?
Typically these systems have an online server that routes the connection over the internet. With a video intercom the home or building may have touch screens installed (Wi-Fi connected or cabled) that connect to the same server over the customers internet connection. Calls from the wireless connected door intercom to the indoor touch screen and mobile App are as quick as a cabled call with almost all features available to a cabled solution.

What other requirements do we need to consider?
The location of the door intercom must have reasonably good mobile signal. The signal depends on the type of connections – voice calls, or data calls, and the device itself.
Device Types
Devices typically available include voice only intercoms, video intercoms with inbuilt radio modem, and standard intercoms with 3rd party 4G outdoor router. This last device is very flexible as it has network redundancy through dual SIMs and allows a broad selection of intercom and camera devices that would normally be hard wired. They also allow for future upgrade of just the router as 5G routers become available and onwards to 6G. Note that outdoor rated 5G routers are available although the cost point is too high at this time.
Additional features of outdoor routers
These devices are full IoT routers with many router features including:
- Fully managed over the air with remote access, upgrades, and security features
- Watchdog facility to reboot the device if the network is lost – this is set to 5 minutes
- Remote logging to a log server to maintain historic log of performance. This is useful to determine signal and network issues.
- Full management included for 12 months with option to extend at the end of the 12 month period.
- Dual SIM for failover if there are carrier related faults to ensure continued connectivity
- 5G version is available although the price point is quite high. These should drop in price in the next 12 months.
4G devices with built-in radio typically don’t have the management facilities of the external IoT router or dual SIM capability.
4G Capable products we sell and support
The following products support use over the 4G/5G networks. Some require a 4G/5G router and others have the radio built in. All of these products are suitable for use where cabling is difficult or undesirable. Contact us for assistance in designing your low cable solution.
